The power of daily rituals and routines

You could say that your entire life consists of routines. A routine is nothing else than something that you do regularly. Once a day, twice a day, once a week, once a month etc.

Now, there are good routines and bad routines.

A good routine is something that makes you feel good or contributes to your wellbeing.

A bad routine is something that doesn’t make you feel good. Easy as that.

We don’t realize how powerful routines are until we change a small thing that we do daily and see the big effect that it has on us.

Small changes could be:

  • Getting up 20 min. earlier to have more time to get ready
  • Eating fruits for breakfast instead of bacon and eggs
  • Not checking the news first thing in the morning and instead
  • Going for a morning walk
  • Having one coffee instead of two
  • Listening to music that you love before you leave the house
  • Doing a 10 min. Yoga routine
  • Taking a different subway car
  • Riding your bike to work instead of taking the bus
  • Wearing colours that you actually like
  • Switching up your lunch routine (instead of going to the cafeteria, going for a walk)
  • Crafting something fun instead of watching TV
  • Trying out a new cafe
  • Trying out a new hobby
  • Taking 20 min. a day to just spend time with yourself

Sometimes we become so accustomed to what we do daily that we don’t question it anymore. And then we wonder why we don’t feel good.

Today I want to give you an easy assignment that will change your life.

Take a piece of paper and a pen and write down the five things that you spend the most time on during your week.

Your list might look like this.

  1. work
  2. cleaning
  3. cooking
  4. caring for kids
  5. watching TV

Here are three questions I want you to ask yourself after you’ve made your list:

  1. Are the things on your list “shoulds” or do you really enjoy them? Be super honest to yourself.
  2. Do these things really contribute to your wellbeing?
  3. Do these routines help you to express your true YOU? (Your true desires? Your true essence?)

If not, what can you do to change these daily/weekly routines to either make them more enjoyable or to replace them with things that make you feel good?

The truth is: You’re more powerful than you think you are. You chose what you do daily and if what you do is not serving you, you’re the only person who can change it.

I love you with all my heart and I do believe in your strength to create the life that you love.
