7 Facts that Hardcore Optimists know. You too?

 

Would you believe me, if I told you, that I used to hate optimists?

 

If you tell them, "Oh, I really hate this weather!!!!", they'd answer, "This winter will make us appreciate the spring even more."

 

Or they tell you that something negative happened, but at the same time they explain to you why it's actually good that they missed the bus, that their boyfriend left them on Christmas Eve and that they didn't get promoted this year.

 

Annoying, right?

 

I used to think, "When are they finally accepting that life is not a pony ride?" I couldn't understand why they don't wanna face reality. For me, it seemed as if they wanna escape the truth. 

 

Basically, I thought, hardcore optimists are a little bit dumb and that I'm way smarter, because I can see what's really happening.

 

Well, now I'm one of these dumb looking weirdos. I'm waking up with a smile on my face and I'm going to bed with a smile on my face and in between I'm really happy to be alive.

 

So, you probably ask yourself: "What happened?"

 

Well my problem was, that I always thought, a little bit of sadness is cool. As a deep-thinker you look more intelligent, more cultured, more interesting, I assumed. Not that I was really aware of these thoughts, but they were always there - in the back of my mind.

 

Another reason why becoming an optimist could seem unattractive for a lot of people, is, that you can feel pretty lonely from time to time.

 

If you don't join the complainers, then there are hardly any conversations left to participate in and suddenly you feel like this geeky teenager again who was not cool enough to join the smoking gang behind the school.

 

Seriously! Try it out! Go on a complaining-diet for only 24 hours and see if you can still talk to your colleagues at work, your friends or your husband. It will be hard, because people like to complain about the weather, not having enough time or money or the government. 

 

Haha, don't get me wrong! I did that my whole life, so I'm actually non-judgmental about it. But to be honest, life is so so so much more fun, if you're turning away from the dark side.

 

If you wanna become one of these annoying hardcore optimists too, you wanna make sure, to be aware of the following facts:

 

  1. Every negative thought you have can be seen on your face and they actually make you look ugly. Oops! 
  2. Every negative thought influences your body. Stress and negativity are affecting your breathing. If you're stressed you breath less deep, so less oxygen can get into your lungs. This affects your blood flow and other parts of your body.
  3. Every positive thought on the other hand, makes you look more radiant, beautiful and healthy! Yeah!
  4. Your smile can save lives. I read a true story about a woman once, who was about to jump off a bridge to commit suicide when a person who was crossing the bridge gave her a big warm smile. In the interview she said, that this smile saved her life. You never know, how many lives you changed today.
  5. Our ancestors worked so hard for the things we take for granted, meaning: running water, electricity, dishwashers, washing machines, cars, streets etc. Imagine the people who built all these railroad tracks across the whole country to provide us with food. If you get aware of all these little things, you are more thankful and more thankful means more happy. There are endless things in one day to make you smile. Even if you just switch on the light!
  6. One day you will be 85 and you will look back and think, I wanna be 35 again. I was young, able to jump and exercise, able to eat everything, able to travel, to wear short skirts. I looked amazing. You owe your 85-year-old-self, that you enjoy every second of your younger version right now. 
  7. If you surround yourself with positivity, you turn into a powerful magnet for all the good things you want to achieve in your life. 

 

You see, being an optimist has its' advantages. Or let me say it in the words of the Dalai Lama:

 

"Choose to be optimistic. It feels better."
